Over 62% of the people who responded to our May 2011 distracted driving survey said their companies have implemented cell phone use policies – but only half of those companies do anything about enforcement. Why should employers care about enforcing cell phone use policies? In a great article by Matthew Heller published last week, Workforce Management lays out the case: companies have to implement and enforce cell phone use policies, or risk being held liable if employee cell phone use causes a crash.
The article features our own CEO, Matt Howard, and attorney Todd Clement, who won a settlement against Cable One after one of its driver’s cell phone use caused a crash that killed two people. In the piece, Clement explains “it’s inconvenient” for employers to enforce cell phone use policies, “because employees’ use of cell phones often benefits the company.” Yet as the experience of Cable One, Dyke Industries and other companies on the business end of a distracted driving lawsuit attests, companies can’t afford to ignore employee cell phone use while driving for work.
